Description

The Curiosity Edition The original Curiosity Edition is where the movement to spread empathy began. Based on the science of trust-building and emotional intelligence, this deck has four levels that help you get more vulnerable as you build trust. The Curiosity Edition explores questions of background, values, and views on important issues like diversity & inclusion, the environment, and mental health. Blue Questions like “Name three things you’re grateful for and why.” Help break the ice. Green Questions like “What are you willing to fight for and why?” let us see where each other is coming from. Yellow Questions like “How do you find fulfillment?” take us a step deeper to connect to one another. Pink Questions like “Can violence ever be justified?” push the party to deeper vulnerability and understanding. How to Play This game isn’t about winning or losing. Actually Curious is about getting past small talk and building meaningful connections. Each round, one player picks a card from one of the stacks and prompts the other(s) that question. Everyone gives their answer and the card gets awarded to the person who gave the “best” answer. One-on-one Take your time, work your way up from blue to green to yellow to red. After you've tried all, hop around!Group of 3-7 One person reads the card, while the others answer. The person who reads, awards the card (and one point) to the person who gave the answer they like most. That person picks the next card! Large Party or Event Host selects volunteers to select a card and prompt a question, while they and one or two other volunteers answer.Experienced Actually Curious players Shuffle and get lucky! Actually CuriousWe've been on lockdown over here during the pandemic because I'm immunocompromised, and there's only so much Netflix we can marathon before we go a little stir-crazy and break out the games. I was interested in the "Actually Curious: Human Rights" expansion pack when it came available on Amazon Vine, but I didn't have the base game ("Actually Curious") so I bought this base game first and tried them out together. The base game is interesting and definitely has a lot of cool questions that would help you get to know someone. Things like "Would you rather have eternal life+youth or the ability to time travel?" can spawn fun long conversations and you can learn a lot about your partner. I definitely recommend playing this game in small close groups; I dread the idea of being forced to use this in a work setting as an icebreaker--but then, I never have felt comfortable sharing my intimate thoughts with strangers. To be honest, I feel strange calling this a "game" because it's not really one in the traditional sense. You draw a card, you read the question, you talk about your answers--there's no points or turns or wins in the traditional sense, which makes the game easy and flexible to "play". I think these cards are really useful for getting to know someone you want to marry, for fleshing out a fictional character you're planning to write about, or for interviewing a celebrity for your blog. I'm not being sarcastic: I like these cards and I think they have a lot of creative value as writing prompts or for really digging deep into someone's history and values. But I cannot imagine ever playing with these as a social game and I dearly hope that these aren't being used at a corporate retreat somewhere.~ Ana Mardoll
